I taught the Bible to children and showed them how to love God and invite him into their hearts. I believe in God – but I don’t fear him. God is my best friend. God is my ally. God is my boyfriend. In reference to Romans, what if a person’s natural desire WAS to be with someone of the same gender? Also, the word homosexual didn’t exist back when the original Bible was composed, very half-hazardly, I might add. It comes from the Greek word ‘arsenokoites’ which, any respected Greek scholar will tell you, we don’t really know what that means. This is the word that’s used in every instance that ‘homosexuality’ is condemned. Interesting to note, that in the Romans passage, Paul is talking about the cult of Cybele; Cybele’s lover was a eunich, so in order to worship their goddess, Cybele’s followers came up with some pretty interesting sexual feats, involving lizards, animals, and group orgies. Besides the fact that Paul says that even THESE people will be better off on judgment day than the church he’s writing to in the book of Romans, I think it’s pretty obvious that this has nothing to do with homosexuality as we understand it today.
Also, please don’t try to speak to us about God. You’re not a prophet, and you have no idea what God is feeling; you certainly have no idea whether or not he’s disappointed. Now, I know that you’re fourteen and probably haven’t seen or met anyone different from what you’re used to. I was exactly the same way; I was raised to practically worship the Bible, which made it extremely difficult for me when I actually studied it and encountered all of its glaring inconsistencies first-hand. And in reference to God’s laws changing… Jesus himself commanded His followers to abstain from meat that was used in sacrifice. Yet, a few years later, Paul says that it’s ok to consume this meat, as long as you don’t offend a more conservative Christian who finds the practice blasphemous. How’s that for God’s “unchanging” laws???

Wow…that’s intense stuff. It’s true that God loves you more than you can ever imagine and there is absolutely nothing you can do to keep God from loving you. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t consequences for our actions and attitudes. God loves even those who have chosen to separate themselves from him due to their actions and attitudes. I’d love for all of us to be united with him ultimately for eternity, but I do believe that as scripture says that’s a narrow road. Many of us who may have thought we were his friends will unfortunately find ourselves on the outside in the end. I don’t pretend to know who that will be, but the fact is that it will be some. Matt. 7:21 However, we do need to first and foremost have mercy for all. Even those who we don’t agree with and especially those who offend us. Dorthy Day of the Catholic Worker Movement said that we can only love God as much as the person we hate the most. That should be food for thought for us all.

Hmm. Well, I’m not much for profanity, so this kind of has that going against it, in that I just don’t find it very funny and even consider it a little off-putting. The basic point that God loves us all is, of course, true. The secondary point that Christians should love those that disagree with them- even those that disagree with them on fundamentally important issues- is also a good one. No argument there. And I think Sarah Palin is an inane VP choice (for multiple reasons), so I’m kind of with you there, too.
But the idea that God doesn’t care what choices we make or actions we perform- as long as we talk to Him and get along- which is an ongoing theme in this post- well, that I must take issue with, fundamentally. Because part of loving another is wanting what is best for them- and people often want to do things that are harmful to themselves and others. And God does not want that. The way you describe God, which I understand is largely meant as an extreme form of humor, also removes from God the force of Judgement that would say “Give to the poor” or “Serve one another.” Because the God you describe, the God who is “all about you” without any challenge, who forgives the sin rather than asking for transformation in the sinner, seems very much the God of America, of Captialism, and, ultimately, the God of the Self. But it does not look much like the God of the Covenant and of Jesus to me. I am not trying to question your Christianity- merely your theology.

Grant, I wasn’t going to write you back, but I just feel compelled to. First of all, PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE. I think you are skipping over parts of it. (Maybe because I am so long-winded!) I am not trying to win an argument with you over anything–I stopped trying to win arguments with non-believers a long time ago.
I think you took all the other “Christians” on the website and lumped them with me. I never said one thing in my comments that was judgemental. If you REALLY READ my comments, you would see that. I didn’t quote the entire chapter of Leviticus 18, Dakini. I quoted the list of what God says sexual immorality was. Because all of you on the website are missing the part in Acts where Paul says the HOLY SPIRIT told him it was acceptable to do ANYTHING except eat the food of idols (which includes the sacrificial meat, Grant) and to abstain from sexual immorality. So all you people who keep throwing out the long hair, etc. are not seeing that God did away with all those laws. God can do anything he wants to. He says that over and over again in the Bible.
Do I understand homosexuality? Absolutely not. Do I think that you can be “born gay”? I absolutely think there are people with those tendencies. I’ve seen them. I’ve also seen men and women who are just vulgar and sick do very sick sexual practices, just out of pure evil. I’ve seen that in both homosexual and heterosexual ways. I didn’t pretend to know everything. I just know that in reading the Bible we realize that we are ALL sinners and we ALL need a Saviour, and I think that is what God wants us to get from the whole thing. Do I know that for sure? Of course not. Could I be totally wrong? Of course I can. But I think it’s a hell of a lot easier to live your life knowing you can’t do one thing to get into Heaven than it is to try to do a myriad of things to get there, like in other religions. We all know there is a Creator. It would make sense to believe He made a way possible for us to be with Him. And since He made us, and not the other way around, wouldn’t it make sense that we can’t do one thing to get there?
That’s what differs between me and a lot of other “Christians”, Grant. I’m not trying to hate. I am trying to LOVE. If you really read into my heart, you would understand that. Thanks for letting me explain.
And one more thing for everybody on the website. Jesus didn’t just say, “Love your neighbor as yourself” although that is a huge commandment. You are not quoting the very first part of that, the part Jesus says is MOST important, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind.” Thanks for letting me clear that up.
