I realize the Great American Spiritual Disconnect doesn’t allow most people to figure this out, but here goes: If you want your professed values to exist and flourish, you…dramatic pause, here…HAVE TO LIVE THEM! A society that wishes to end racism has to send clear, unequivocal messages that NO sort of racism is acceptable, even to get a laugh. A society which wants to have peace cannot turn around and spend hundreds of billions on “defense†and stamp every soldier with the imprimatur of “Hero†and expect to have peace.
You have to live your principles, if you want to see them realized, which means that it’s NOT enough that Miley said she was sorry. She has to make the honest, difficult effort within herself to purge her thinking of these ideas. Will she do it? Probably not. She will likely fall victim to what I consider the greatest irony in the world, which is that wealthy people have, at their disposal, the means to live the Unitive Life, but the very fact of their possessing the means to do it is the thing that keeps them from doing it. Sad, but true.
And so, I’m left saying the same thing I always do: Evolve Already!

Thank you for speaking out, Margaret! It irritates me so much when people mock Asians and then tell them, “it’s only a joke” but people riot if you mock any other group. It’s annoying that it’s acceptable to target Asians but no one else. I don’t think being a teenager is an excuse – people know better by the time they’re 7 years old.

Children tend to do and say things that aren’t appropriate, therefore we should gently correct them and put them on their proper path. I love the song Margaret lol and I love that it was posted on my birthday thanks for the awesome present. 😀 I hated the non-talented can’t sing a note in key Cyrus before this whole photo scandal but now I just feel sorry for her.. because she’s so ignorant, stupid and close-minded. Her half assed apology doesn’t give me much respect for her either. She’s just doing it cause her parents and publicists don’t want her to lose money from her asian fan base if there’s any left. After reading most of these comments, I have several responses:
1) What if Miley Cyrus had posed for a picture in a way that was offensive to black people? Would there be the same response? I think often times when someone publicly makes fun of Asian people or makes a seemingly racist comment about them, it is not regarded as seriously as it would if it were another nationality/ethnicity.
2) I don’t mean this to come off mean, but for those of you who honestly think that Miley Cyrus was just making a funny face, that’s just being naive. Either that or stupid. It is so blatantly obvious that she is mocking Asian people. She is not simply making a funny face, especially when you consider what the other people in the picture are doing (holding up peace signs – a staple pose of Asian people in pictures). Seriously, really think about it, she is mocking Asian people and ultimately that comes off as a bit racist. If you really can’t see that then that’s being naive.
3) I understand that she is young and that everyone makes mistakes, of course. In addition, I definitely understand that some people may want to brush it off as a joke. But the truth is that it is probably being taken seriously in some places/areas just because of the fact that she is in the spotlight and younger people (maybe even older) look up to her. It’s obvious that younger fans who really look up to her and worship her are gonna be influenced everything she does, including mocking Asian people.
4) Margaret Cho is not just being hypocritical. She makes fun of the stereotypes that other people have of Asian people and ultimately helps make sense of all of it. Of course she makes fun of her own people, but she’s using her humor to bring those issues to light and bring understanding to it through the use of comedy. And yes, it does make a HUGE difference that it is coming for her, an asian herself, one who actually understands it and has the exigence and right to play around with it.
5) For those of you who are saying things like “seriously just get over it” or “get over yourself” or “it is not that big of a deal,” and you find yourself in the category of being a white person, please: SHUT THE FUCK UP! You have absolutely no idea what it’s like to be mocked or made fun of because of your race. It doesn’t matter if it’s coming from some innocent 16 year old. Being made fun of for your race just doesn’t sit well with minorities, period. Seriously if you are white and think you understand enough to make statments like that, you’re seriously just dumb. You really have no understanding of what it’s like to be mocked or made fun of, therefore seriously shut the fuck up. If you’re one of the people who I’m addressing right now and have read through this and don’t agree and are looking to respond to this, you’re seriously just ignorant and chances are you’ll respond in some ignorant way thinking that what you say is actually right.
Her second apology (surely written by a publicist) gets at the real issue: actions can be unintentionally hurtful. I’m willing to cut her a little slack for being 16 and having the real world experience of a toddler. Hopefully, she did learn from this.

Allow me to respond to your response …
1) Who Miley offended doesn’t make her actions right or wrong. One group speaking out more loudly than another only creates greater intimidation, not greater remorse or culpability. Whether or not an action is taken seriously or not does not change the action. Either what Miley did was wrong or it was not. Asians are not the most oppressed people in our society. What’s more, it doesn’t matter whether or not one form of racism is the “most”, discrimination of any kind is still wrong. What you are witnessing from Miley is clearly NOT racism or discrimination.
2) So what if she is making light of the appearance of Asians? Does this make her a racist? Does anyone here even know what racist means? I didn’t see many Klansmen hanging around with their black friends in black face. Making fun of someone’s appearance is comedy. Does everyone think the same things are funny? Nope! What some find funny others find offensive. I am not tall. It is a difference I live with daily. It includes being made fun of, not being taken seriously at times and being overlooked in social situations. Does that make a short joke unfunny? Nope! Regardless of my height, some short jokes are hilarious. The worst someone could accuse Miley of here is not being very funny. If that’s a crime I say we storm Jimmy Fallon’s house.
3) Whether or not people take it seriously does not change the action. If I do something and one person is angry, the action is not less wrong than if a million people are angry. People will interpret any action as a reflection of the feelings they hold within themselves. Miley may not have a racist bone in her body and yet a racist person might still be offended by something she does. Is that her problem? Of course not. By the way, in case you’re wondering out there, you yourself would have to be harboring some deep racist beliefs to seriously categorize what she did as racist. Check your filters people, they’re broke.
4) Margaret Cho is also being unfunny at worst and hilarious at best. Although, without offering further clarification behind the actual motivation for her action, it is somewhat disingenuous to take the action she has here. Either making light of racial distinctions is funny or it’s not. Cho is not judged harshly for her racist remarks because it is assumed that underneath it all she is not biased against minorities. Why is it being assumed that Miley is? One word: racism.
5) The people who are responding like idiots have a very good reason for doing so … they ARE idiots. Idiots with bad grammar and spelling at that. On another note, it is not necessary to be of a different race to understand racism or discrimination. Women have it worse than any single other group on the planet. Everyone has the potential to feel the pain of being shunned. Everyone is welcome to weigh in on this topic because they are human. To suggest that people cannot have a valid opinion because of their race is again, in a word, racist.
And to Andrew personally, it is not necessary to degrade your speech to make your voice heard. Intelligent conversation goes much farther than blather.

If no one reacted with outrage to her actions, would they still be wrong? What if two people reacted? What about two hundred? What if the people who reacted weren’t Asian? What if they were?
Just because someone is offended by the actions of another does NOT make it wrong. You cannot control whether or not someone is offended by something.
A great number of people found the act funny. Who is right?
Lastly, who said I was “upset” by the reaction of these so-called prominent Asian American groups? More importantly, what do have to say about the Asian Americans who themselves were upset by the reaction of these Asian American groups who claim to represent the sentiment of their people?

I am an Asian, too… I don’t find MC offended me with his Asian eyes pictures. I don’t know why Asians are upset about it. If Asian can embrace their beautiful eyes, I don’t think they will be too worried about it. But most of Asians don’t like their eyes, so that’s the problem.
Caucasians have blonde hair. Other race such as blacks and Asians color their hair blonde but it does not offend the Caucasians. When you feel proud of who you are, you won’t be worried much.
Maybe because I don’t have small eyes… so I am not offended.
