Good old Fred Phelps never fails to impress me with the lengths he will go to in order to show how much he hates homosexuals. This time he took his homo-hatin’ congregation to stage a protest at a funeral of two Tennessee soldiers who died in Iraq. Phelps claims that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq because God is punishing America for harboring gays. I didn’t know that America harbors gays. “Give me your tired gays and lesbians, wretched trannies yearning to breathe free…†Since when has this country been a safe pink port in a storm? Phelps acts like America is just one big gay men’s choir or lesbian softball league. I wish that I lived in the country that he believes is here.
At least people weren’t having him, because the angry Phelps was drowned out by an even larger counter-protest of people who were even angrier that the homophobes were disrupting a funeral in order to further their idiotic cause. What’s his problem anyway? Why does he think God hates fags? What good does he think he will do by mocking the tragic, needless deaths of American troops and harassing their families? If anything, it might bring more support for our cause.
Actually, I applaud Phelps for his efforts because everything he does seems to build more of an argument against homophobia and hatred. What if Phelps is actually an undercover queer activist, using radical methods of reverse psychology in order to win support for gay Americans? It isn’t so hard to believe. Everything he has done is completely hateful and makes people who would otherwise be ambivalent to gays want to protect them. Fred Phelps is so easy to make a stance against, because his arguments are preposterous, his accusations nonsensical, his agenda just plain stupid… he truly must be a secret ally.
