The ban on gay marriage in California has been lifted!! I can’t believe it. For everyone who has been working for this for what seems like such a long time it feels like a miracle. I am not sure what this means now. Can gays and lesbians get married in California? Today?!
Update: Ian and some readers updated me and said that in 30 days, gay and lesbian couples in California will legally be able to marry. I am absolutely thrilled!! Well?! What are you waiting for? If you have a longtime partner – now is the time!! If you have always wanted to be married here is your chance!!!! Yay California!!! Yay! Gay!! Marriage!!!

Anyone know a decent area with reasonable rent in California? This Illinoisan and her lady are getting damn tired of waiting for the “Land of Lincoln” to do anything about civil rights for LGBTQ people.

Hey all, I live in the “Equality” State of Wyoming and I’m curious how this ruling will affect other states. Did you know that we still don’t have a hate crimes law here, even after Matthew Shepard, not to mention Brokeback Mountain?! I’m with Katelyn above about wanting to transplant to CA asap!
HOORAY! Our day is coming! I have been considering moving to LA from Chicago for a few months now, anyway. The fact that Illinois is supposedly going to pass civil unions legislation this session now seems less exciting. I am right there with you, Katelyn! Why not pack up and hit the road for CA?!?

Depends if it can clear that finally hurdle with the voters come November. If it does then the ban has been lifted all together. I hope voters vote that way. This may set a factor that gay marriage will be legal in all states at last!

From the point of view of a straight white male: I’ve never understood the fear people have about gay marriage.
If two men or two women want to get married how does that affect my relationship with my wife?
I hope this is finally falling to common sense.
And for all the bible thumpers Jesus never said anything against gays, that’s Old Testament stuff. Jesus talked about loving everyone without exception.
I have great hope that my gay son will be able to fall in love and marry just as his mother and father did. And I will proudly stand at the ceremony.
This battle isn’t over yet. Almost all of us (the Gay and Lesbian population in CA) are very much aware that this recently acquired right is still in limbo.
Just make sure you register to vote a few months BEFORE the November election.
Then, VOTE in November… especially if you are a resident in CA.
… AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO REGISTER EARLY AND VOTE.
The proposition to overturn the court ruling and change the CA State Constitution has been ratified and will be on the ballot in November. The Conservatives and Republicans are going to use the ballot measure with fervor to get out their constituents to vote. This ballot measure will also hinder the existing rights for “CA Same Sex” Domestic Partnership. But what do they care if they strip us of our rights. It will help them sleep at night knowing that they kept my partner and I from sharing medical benefits.

Now let’s hope that those anti-marriage people don’t pass that initiative. Everyone should have the right to marry, this is after all supposed to be the most free nation in the world. Yet, here in Tx. I still feel like a second class citizen.
After California allowed interracial marriages, many states followed suit, perhaps it will happen again.

hey tony, the Bible may not record Jesus as having said anything about Homosexuality, but that doesnt mean he never did say anything about it. Do you think the bible recorded his every word? i mean it is a relatively short book. Also there is plenty of mention in the new testament about homosexuality being a sin as well. HAving said that, i do love everyone, but not necesserily do i love everything they do with their life. Dont assume just Because it isnt in the Bible that Jesus never said it.
