Some Childhood Photos!

Here is a photo of me from my 1st birthday party. I don’t remember anything that happened so I must have been pretty drunk.

My mom sewed everything we are wearing in this next photograph. I love the bias cut long skirt with the contrasting panels. That kind of skirt is very hard to sew at home because the weave of the fabric has to be lined up just right. I hate to sew on the fucking bias! My mom was into it though. I bet she would have been a pretty mean contender on “Project Runway.”

Clearly, I was really obsessed with Holly Hobby. I was all prairie oriented. I would only read books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, which I now feel are terribly racist and sexist, but I didn’t really understand that then. I would only drink milk – no water or soda! I rocked that bonnet all the time and even had a special one for bedtime – I shit you not. I had a tantrum because my parents would not let me carry around a candle at night!

Why does every single kid from the 70s have some version of this photo? Please send me yours.

  1. OMG… I have one of those. From… uh… I think it was Disney World. Yeah, they have stockyards in Disney world too, probably close to Pirates of the Carribean or somewhere in that vicinity.

You look so cute on your first birthday! I love how you’re so drunk at age 1 (you knew how to party way back then!)

I’m infamous (or famous… is there REALLY a diff?) for remembering stuff at a very VERY young age. I remember when I was one. I remember when I was three. And people NEVER believe me but I knew I was bi at age 3. I had my first little girlfriend back then… and a boyfriend named Brett on the side. He let me sit next to him in preschool and would even share his apple crisp with me. Good man. Mmm.

  2. I Loved Holly Hobby! I Can’t believe someone else remembers that! The first birthday I remember (3 I believe) I had a Holly Hobby cake! And Little House on the Prairie was like soap opera-crack to my innocent eyes! Oh man! That’s awesome!
(My mom sewed, too. Crazy) Love the pics. Love you. Rock on!

  3. Luv the little bonnet! I can’t believe you still look 10, just taller. Very cute. Okay, maybe my pics were from the 80s but I’m now going to call my mother and ask why I didn’t get a hankie bonnet on my head picture like the other little girls.

  4. I adored the Little House books as a child and read them over and over and over. It wasn’t until they came out of the attic and went on the bookshelf for my own children that I reread them and also realized how much sexism and racism existed within my beloved books.

    Mama Kelly

PS you are so damn adorable in your bday party pic I can barely stand it

  5. Man, I think every Korean baby has that same colorful Korean dress. My cousin did, and I had the male counterpart to it.

By the way, do you know what you picked as child to indicate about your life? I think I picked the noodles to mean long life.

  6. Cousin Helen! Universal Studios next to Frankenstein! It was horror! How funny!
I don’t know where the photo is, but I’m gonna ask my mom if she still has it! How funny! Seriously, you look exactly like my cousin Helen when we went to visit from Colorado. When I find the photo I am emailing it. Promise!
