Jerry Corsi

Jerry Corsi is one of the astonishingly idiotic authors of the book “Unfit for Command.” The book attempts to smear John Kerry’s military record in Vietnam, claiming that he betrayed his fellow soldiers by alleging atrocities committed by U.S. troops and earned his medals by indiscriminately killing a Viet Cong teenager. Corsi is a frequent poster on freerepublic.com*, a right wing online insane asylum (here are some letters I received from the “freepers”).

Last week, he made a public apology for posting that, “Islam is a peaceful religion – just as long as the women are beaten, the boys buggered and the infidels are killed.” He said that his words were taken out of context and he was sorry if he had offended anyone. What kind of context would they be taken out of in which these statements would not be offensive? At a Ku Klux Klan rally? An outdoor Neo-Nazi music festival? The GOP convention? These types of statements make him unfit for comment, on anything really, let alone politics.

I am constantly amazed at how absurdly ignorant some people are. They act as if they are the only ones on earth. Their reality is terribly knee-jerk, and they have a manner of speaking which reeks of the arrogance of independence even though they have precious few self-generated thoughts.

It is depressing how much we’d rather believe what we are told than find things out on our own. We have this propaganda now that tells us to blindly believe that Islam is bad, that the religion itself is somehow un-American, that evil springs from the Fertile Crescent. If only the world were so simple, that bad people came in one color, so they could be effectively stamped out for the good of all. Corsi and his type, and there are many, believe that this is true, and they are looking for the best way to make this known without having too much resistance from everyone who thinks.

His statement is clumsy and incorrect. Domestic abuse is global. If you pay attention to the latest rumors of evidence surfacing about the Iraqi prison scandal, it seems that American soldiers are doing a lot of the boy buggering and the death tolls on both sides show that the ‘infidels’ are cleaning up.

This whole war is subtly shaded to be one between Islam and Christianity, but it isn’t. It is about oil and ownership, but since people cannot grasp the idea that their government might lie to them, that the people they might vote (or more likely let cheat their way) into office care far more about their own interests than the lives of American soldiers or Iraqi civilians, it is much easier to make it a holy war. God is the ultimate gauntlet to throw down, because no one questions it or gets specific with it. It is approached with apprehension, fear of argument, with a bowed head and offering in hand.

When it comes to religion, people are hyper-aware, intensely sensitive, incredibly myopic. There is an unstated but absolute superiority of Protestant Christian faith, for to make reference to it would be to cast doubt upon it. Something about these denominations have an air of cleanliness to them, and almost a secular quality, as if these were the only true ways to salvation, and the path is so clear that it doesn’t seem like a path at all. These sects are like Diet God, all the heaven and no calories. Other faiths are looked at with suspicion that turns into justified rage at its most malevolent. Atrocity is easy when you assume your victims are Godless. If God saw what we were doing in His name, He would weep copiously without warning or restraint. How about that Hurricane Charley?

Also the apology Corsi made is questionable, as I can’t imagine that he would be really sorry for what he said, because he is so flip and arrogant about it. The casual nature of his hatred is evidence of his absolute devotion to this kind of non-thinking. He is not sorry for what he said, rather, he is sad that people are calling him on it, because in order to appear as one of the dutiful Americans of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, he must not be what he is, a ruthlessly immoral, adolescent, irresponsible, cowardly and unfunny bigot.

More of Corsi’s genius – “So this is what the last days of the Catholic Church are going to look like. Buggering boys undermines the moral base and the lawyers rip the gold off the Vatican altars. We may get one more Pope, when this senile one dies, but that’s probably about it.”

I am no huge fan of the Pope, but then again, Corsi claims to be a devout Catholic, so I am not really sure what that is about. Is he looking to get Bush into the Vatican too?

And that isn’t all – “After he married TerRAHsa, didn’t John Kerry begin practicing Judaism? He also has paternal grandparents that were Jewish. What religion is John Kerry?”

What is the meaning behind the spelling of Theresa’s name? Is that a way to Arabicize her in order to insult her? If so, then that is a double slur, because not only is it derogatory towards the Arabic and the Jewish world, for it assumes that to be part of either is a bad thing to begin with, it is also makes her out to be some kind of faith bandit, inferring that she would be the one controlling the nation with her wicked, witchy Judaic ways. It’s an allusion that the First Couple might be Jewish – and why is that such a terrible thing to imagine? Dreidels in the White House is not cause for alarm. What is so scary about Passover? Who cares what religion they are? It matters less to me that they are religious and more that they care. Incidentally, they are Catholic, which to the backwards, let-other-people-do-their-thinking-for them-like-it-was-laundry, Charlie Daniels-listening, freerepublic.com-posting, Fox News-watching, Bush-voting, Islam-despising, everyone-who-ain’t-us-hating, nincompoop contingent is practically an ancient Pagan earth religion.

Corsi immediately rebukes himself with his own bigotry and prejudice. Once you see someone’s ignorance, you can’t see anything but that. This is the glorious thing about stupidity. It’s sticky. Those who didn’t think that he was a dummy before, now have to admit how dumb he is. What is dangerous is that the real morons will only see more of themselves in him, and I fear there are more of them than there are of us.
