Cho Dependent

Here’s the fancy-pants write up about Cho Dependent. Enjoy!

Beginning with her early days on the scene in the Bay Area, comedian Margaret Cho has always been the Agent Provocateur of stand up. Never one to shy away from a difficult, or even ‘taboo’ topic, there is no subject off limits. Her socially aware brand of comedy has made her both a thought leader as well as a teacher to those with open minds and open hearts. Her newest stand-up concert film, Cho Dependent, recorded during her 2010 tour, finds Margaret in her usual top form, riffing on smart topics that actually matter.

Cho Dependent was an official selection at this year’s Outfest, Newfest, Frameline and the audience winner for Best Comedy at Atlanta’s Out on Film Fest. Cho Dependent will make it’s debut on the Showtime Channel beginning October 15, while the DVD is set to be released on November 21, 2011 via Rocket Science. The DVD version will also feature Behind The Scenes backstage bonus footage with Margaret.

Audiences who caught these performances live can attest that Cho hasn’t lost any of her edge on Cho Dependent, her sixth live concert film. Shot at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, [coincidentally, a comfortable locale for Cho as she films the Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva in the city], this DVD shares a name with her Grammy nominated comedy album. The album, which featured Margaret alongside artists such as Fiona Apple, Andrew Bird, Grant Lee Phillips, Tegan & Sara, Ben Lee and more, was widely praised for Cho’s songwriting as well as her musicianship. The Cho Dependent film features songs from the album interwoven into the thought provoking stories she tells. Says Margaret, “I’m really in love with this show as it’s the first time I got to bring my comedy and my music together. It was the hardest I have ever worked on anything, and I had such an amazing time on this tour. I wanted to film in Atlanta because the city has become an adopted hometown for me and I think that could be felt in this performance. It was amazing to come back to the south and bring something I was so proud of to share with all my friends!”

In some ways Cho Dependent is a return to form, with fresh stories about her mother and her grandparents that have never been told before. Cho fans know that her unrestricted view of family life was an early indication of her willingness to share everything with her audience. Uncensored, but never unhinged, Cho also takes aim at the Palins, her stint on Dancing With the Stars cruising in the south, smoking pot and living in a world with ‘sexting.’ Honest, passionate and hilarious, Cho Dependent is simply Margaret Cho at her very best.
