The Cho must go on

DALLAS - When it comes to preachin' to the choir, comedian Margaret Cho is the high priestess of stand-up. In the first of two packed shows this weekend at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas, Cho pounded her would-be pulpit, lashing out at the Bush administration, the flap over gay marriage and even the still-fresh circus surrounding Terri Schiavo.

Cho's die-hard fan base -- mostly gay men and the women who love them -- had plenty to relate to as the comic spent a large portion of her show going off on the injustices faced by gay Americans: "Being gay is not outrageous," she shouted, "and if you think it is, you're gay!"

But even in the heart of Bush country, the biggest cheers generated came from Cho's frustrated rants on the current Republican rule. "You know things are bad politically when you reminisce about how good Ronald Reagan was," she said.

And Cho revisited the spot-on impersonation of her mother, complete with her broken English/Korean accent, in speaking of the heart attack her mom suffered last year.

After the more one-woman-show feel of previous "Notorious C.H.O." and "Revolution" tours, the aptly titled "Assassin" gets back to the stand-up basics. Any Cho show is worth your while, but her more enjoyably intimate vibe here felt like an evening of drinks with an old friend.
