Our Story

This week we are telling a story with our dance. Our storyline is my story. When I did TV the first time, what seems like so many years ago, I was told I was too overweight to play myself – I became so sick with anorexia, I almost died. This story is about how I overcame feeling self doubt, and became beautiful to myself. This is the moment when I said to myself, “This is it. This is what I look like – and I accept who I am completely.” So many people never do this in their entire lives. I want to show them how. So it is about Lola, the showgirl, who is beautiful and is loved by herself and everyone else. I am a showgirl – because I am showing off this girl!! It’s also an important story to tell because there have been so many suicides by gay teens lately. I want to reach out to these kids who feel like they don’t have any hope and say that yes, there is hope. There is love. Stay with me. Let’s stick around for it. Together.

  1. I tuned into DWTS for the first time this week because of you. I absolutely adored your dance and thought you did beautifully. It it so wonderful to see you smile so brightly because I can tell you’re having an absolute blast. Thank you so much for being a beacon of light for the gay community. We are so lucky to have you on our side! Keep dancin’ girl, you’re damn good at it!

  2. Ares you talking about All American Girl? I love loved loved that show! Finally Asian Americans (plural) on tv as the main characters. Thanks for breaking through!

  3. I’m recovering from bulimia and this story made me tear up. I keep a copy of your blog post about the “fuck it diet” by my bed so if I’m feeling scared or want to binge or purge or do other compulsive things or whatever I can look at it and know that you got better and that I can get better.

i love you and i thank you.

  4. the news today about the young guy at Rutgers is heartbreaking.

Our politicians are still giving credence to hatred. Every time they turn away from the gay community & vote against the gay community, they are legitimizing & validating ignorance.

And things like suicide & hateful acts from bigots are the fallout.

Been a sad few weeks for the gay community.

Anyway, I think you’re great Margret. Thanks for doing what you do.

  5. This IS so important. Being comfortable in your own skin, the way you are UNIQUELY you, and loving it. Not seeking approval from anyone but truly embracing HOW you are, WHO you are, AS you are, being authentic. And not trying to fit into someone elses vision of you, because you are ok as is! This is a fabulous message that cuts across so many facets of society whether you’re dealing with a body image issue or being true to yourself and ok with it no matter what others think.

    I love you MaCho!!! xoxo’s

  6. I keep a copy of “The Fuck It Diet” taped to my bedroom mirror. I remember reading that blog entry and crying because it was like I was reading my own story. Your words have given me confidence and reassurance more times than I can count.

Thank you for your honesty and your empathy and your fearlessness and your example. Your story touches more people than you will ever know.

  7. I’m excited for the next episode of DWTS! Your story is such an inspiration, I think it’s BEAUTIFULLY fitting you tell it through dance.

    On ABC 😉

  8. THANK YOU for this message- I am so excited to see you on Monday night- you are the highlight of the show! I was fortunate to see you a few weeks ago in Phoenix and LOVED your show (although I had to leave early since I had the flu)! I think all the Queers in Phoenix were there to see and support you!It was like PRIDE at the Dodge theater.
“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever
human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take
sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence
encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” -Eli Wiesel

  9. I follow your dancing through YouTube since they don’t show DWTS over here in Sweden. I just had to come here to tell you you are so beautiful and I get so inspired from you! I will totally cheer you on as long as you’re on the show, which hopefully will be to the end.

  10. Margaret, I just want to say thank you for all that you do. I do my best to be involved in gay rights activism and reaching out to any troubled LGBT individuals and letting them know it will be okay… although my voice does not always carry the reassurance that I wish it could. When you say that there is NOTHING WRONG with being gay, however, these kids (and adults) listen and believe it a little more. You’ve made a difference in the lives of so many LGBT people. Thank you for that. So much.

  11. You r so totally hot & awesome!! Thanks again for coming to Phoenix. Loved the show!! Looking forward to next time. Sorry about last night. Keep doing what you’re doing. Don’t ever change for anyone but yourself. Thanks again for a great night in AZ.

  12. Hi Margaret,

I am a black, gay, out artist. I find you inspiring and empowering and would love to build a friendship with you. I blog regularly and would love for you to read about what I think and write. Please go to queertoday.com and frontierspublishing.com and have a look.

    Thank You,

    Anthony Carter

  13. I’m looking forward to seeing you dance this week. I was just sitting here feeling so sad about the boy at Rutgers. We each take our own journey toward self-acceptance and it sounds like he was at the very start of his and wasn’t ready or prepared to be outed and humiliated in such a public fashion. I don’t have the answers on how to avoid anything like this in the future, but I feel certain that those of us who are out and proud are helping to make it a more welcoming world for LGBT youngsters and anyone else who is struggling to accept themselves. So thank you, Margaret, for being out and living your life on your terms for all the world to see.

  14. Margaret.. I watch you on Drop Dead Diva all the time. You are just such a terrific actress and beautiful woman. Relax on DWTS. You can dance and Louie is just such a great partner. Just pretend you’re on DDD having fun!

p.s. Totally loved the dress this week. Where did they get that? Oh, never mind, it wouldn’t fit me anyway but I would totally wear it 🙂

  15. Margaret,

Thank you for sharing your story on DWTS tonight! Thank you for bringing awareness to the suffering and discrimination gay people face everyday. My sister is a lesbian, and it breaks my heart when I see her cry because she is not accepted or because she feels like she has to hide her true self from my family. I love her so much and I hope that one day she will be able to openly talk about her partner without worrying what people think. I hope that one day she can hold her girlfriend’s hand without being so self-conscious.

Best of luck tomorrow night! I’ll definitely be rooting for you!

  16. My spouse and I think you’re beautiful! We caught your show in Anaheim last month and laughed our asses off!!!!!!!

  19. hi.Margaret.
I am Ryan from Seoul, Korea and currently, staying in toronto. I voted for you.
Ppl are making stupid comments on gay ppl on discussion board in dwts website, and I am furious. They are purely ignorant.
Anyways, I enjoy watching you every single week. I loved your dancing. I hope you do slow song next time 🙂
    LOVE you very much

  20. Loved your dance last night – and though the lack of practice time while on the road kept your routine from being as sharp as it could have been, I honestly think you are the most improved dancer over all from Week 2. Hang in there, it’s all coming together for you. We got your back with the votes. You keep focusing on the dance.

    LOL (Lots Of Love)
