Transamerican Love Story

I am all about the show TRANSAMERICAN LOVE STORY on Logo. It is a groundbreaking dating show, with the object of everyone’s affections, the incredibly beautiful and talented Calpernia Addams. I met adorable Jim, one of the handsome suitors vying for Calpernia’s affections, at my show this past weekend in Los Angeles, and he told me to get the show from iTunes and I am so glad I did! I love that Logo is doing a dating show centered around a gorgeous transgender woman. I feel that this is not only very interesting for everyone – it is very political. The transgender community has long been ignored by the mainstream queer community – which is unfortunate because they are the ones who receive the most discrimination out in the ‘straight’ world. The violence and homophobia they experience is exponentially worse – the statistics are downright depressing. I think that homophobia is worse than terrorism – because homosexuality does no harm to anyone – yet hatred against it prevails! Homophobia is so awful it makes me heterophobic! And it makes me mad that when I write ‘heterophobia’ it makes my spellcheck go on – because that is not even a word – yet ‘homophobia’ totally is.

  1. I’m glad someone besides me is watching it- I blogged about it and have befriended Shawn, who does a blog at transameriblog.blogspot.com, which gives some fun behind the scenes insight!

  2. I agree… the only thing about transexuality that causes me pause or concern is how it seems to be counterproductive sometimes… because some transsexuals are not happy or satisfied unless they can “pass” and that in turn can be self-defeating and androgynophobic. And I think androgynous people are completely beautiful as well… when even the most discerning senses might be aware of a difference but can’t quite tell what it is, or if they suspect… still don’t know if the person was born male or female… because of their sheer beauty period.

  3. er… my spiffy comment got deleted. 🙁 um, people can be androgynophobic too… so it’s sad to see some transexuals not happy because they don’t think they “pass.” when they’re completely beautiful the way they are… maybe even moreso than if they did try to “pass.”

  4. I STRONGLY recommend For The Bible Tells Me So, it is a GREAT documentary about Christian families with gay children. It is educational and gives great insights into the discriminations and false assumptions about homosexuals. : )

  5. Wow I really did not know much about Calpurnia Addams, so I found her website and watched alot of her youtube videos, she’s cool! The Transamerican Love Story sounds great! I’m going to start watching it. Who knows this might turn out to be a great thing for her, love is in the air.Peace

  6. “I think that homophobia is worse than terrorism – because homosexuality does no harm to anyone”

You know, being against homophobia is an admirable sentiment. But there’s pretty much no way to read the above-quoted statement without coming to the conclusion that you are making the negative implication that the targets of terrorism do harm people.

I really hope that’s not really what you meant to imply. Or do you really believe that Daniel Pearl … those commuters in London and Madrid … those secretaries in the Twin Towers … the five adults killed (including a 70-year-old Buddhist man in a grocery store) and fifteen children (8 in a playground bombing, 7 in a public motorcycle bombing) injured in seven separate attacks in Yala, southern Thailand, within just the past week and a half … those Australian dancers at a disco in Bali … or the gay man who was stabbed and clubbed to death in Jolo, the Philippines just a couple of weeks ago … that all these people and the thousands of others killed or maimed by terrorists every year around the world harm people?

  7. Margaret Cho, I love you but I’m curious… you keep spelling Calpernia as Calpurnia! Even though you link to her website with the right spelling right beneath the spelling! You might want to fix that 🙂

  8. As a 53 year-old transitioning MtF I can honestly say I don’t give a rats ass what the world thinks of me. What I do, I do for myself and the end of 50+ years of depression.
My goal is at least 50+ years of being female (or as close as science and medicine can get me).
Try and take it away from me and get your ass kicked or worse (no Margeret, not you).

  9. Please everyone~it’s not ONLY homophobia that’s the source of bullying…it’s SEXUAL CHOICE that is in peril. Slut-shaming, whore shaming, gay bashing ~ it’s all about bullying someone’s individual, SEXUAL CHOICE.

The issue is broader and we should go ahead and include all of these when we mention homophobia, as all of these issues depend on freedom of sexual choice and freedom from judgment of others regarding sexual choice. This is so important to note. Love you, Margaret…thanks so much for this entry 🙂 See you in Cleveland!
