Wow this is very interesting! People are super passionate about PETA! They really love them or they really hate them! I guess I would say myself, I don’t always agree with all their tactics, but hell, I just love animals. I can’t help it. I love them. All animals. But mostly dogs, because they are the most accessible to me. I am a severe dogizer. Whenever I see a dog, I check her out and try to get with her, at least for a second. I love it when you start petting a dog you don’t know, and you come upon their sweet spot – either on their chest near their dog underarms, or at the base of the tail, and they start thumping their dog foot! It is the most satisfying feeling. I also love the tendency of larger breeds to lean on your leg while you are petting them. They start to push all their dog weight onto you like they could fall asleep on you. I also like to kiss on top of dog heads where the fur is especially soft.
So any organization about helping dogs and other animals, is cool. Whether that is the ASPCA or Best Friends or PETA – I think it is all good because it gives people a choice in what they can do to help animals. Although I love animals, I don’t want to be a vegan. I used to be a vegan – and it makes me have such stinky farts. I almost executed myself in my own gas chamber. Stinky farts. No – stanky farts. Smells so bad that I have to change the ‘i’ to an ‘a’. I mean seriously. It is not ok. As a meat eater, I find that my farts are much more bark than bite. It’s all air and movement and reverb. It is like my ass is blowing you a kiss.
I love dogs too, but PETA is off there rocker. They’re against wearing wool?? C’mon. If you think you’re a PETA supporter, you should look in to them and make sure you agree with what you’re supporting. We all love cats and/or dogs, but that doesn’t mean you should support PETA. Give you’re money to the ASPCA or something.

I’m all for helping animals-I’m a vegetarian, I love my dog more than anything–and I am 100% against PETA. Ingrid Newkirk, PETA’s president, has said, “Pet ownership is an absolutely abysmal situation brought on by human manipulation.”
So they don’t want you to have pets. But how can they claim to act in animals’ interests when they kill thousands of animals each year? In 2006, PETA euthanized 97% of the animals it received in Virginia. Newkirk herself told The New Yorker in 2003 that when she worked in animal shelters, “(I would) go to work early, before anyone got there, and I would just kill the animals myself. Because I couldn’t stand to let them go through that. I must have killed a thousand of them, sometimes dozens every day.”

Others have already talked about PETA’s sexism and Holocaust comparison; there’s also the way they target children by teaching them not to drink milk and handing out pamphlets entitled “Your Mommy Kills Animals.” Oh, and they say that students should drink beer instead of milk, because we don’t have enough drunk driving and alcoholism. Disgusting.
Sorry about the length of this comment! I could write an essay… Anyway, there are lots of awesome organizations that help animals, as you said, but I can’t believe that PETA is one of them.
PETA got into hot water for good reason b/c they were taking animals from shelters and people (trying to find a home for their animals, thinking these were rescuers) and they would take the animals and immediately murder them. If Meat Is Murder (SO SAYS THE VEGAN, aka me), why the fuck is that cool? And they want to kill all pit bulls and similar breeds that are tortured so often. Anyone like me doing animal rescue work on a regular basis – says the EX-PETA member (I was a member for years), is rightly horrified by the hypocrisy. There are many other orgs in this country and world that work against factory farms, eating meat, AND are for pets and animal rescue and even are part of the no-kill movement (a biggie is Best Friends, but there are many more including ones like A Rotta Love Plus, and Eleventh Hour Rescue, etc) that aren’t for stealing animals on mass, murdering them and throwing them dead into dumpsters like so much trash. They would do it to your dogs if they could, if they had gone to them instead of where you adopted them from. They take in a lot of money and publicity for work that others already do much better with far less hyposcrisy and manipulation. Thank you for listening, because I used to give money and PR to PETA like crazy until I found out more and more of their murderous lies. Having pets teaches humans how to be more human and to love, respect and nuture all sentient creatures. Thats why PETA’s plan of phasing out pets is hideous.
Its terrible we have way to many dogs and cats to go into good homes and thats where education and spay and neuter programs help the most. I know in my heart that some day people will start getting the hang of it. We’ve got to reach the children of this country and start the process of changing habits that promote endless litters of puppies and kittens. It can be done.
I cant image my life without my dogs. They are my heart and soul. They know all my secrets. I really cant imagine a world without them either. They were created just for us. All of us. Protectors and friends. What a blessed creation they are!
Yea, I was totally going to post the link to petakillsanimals.com. Ingrid Newkirk is fucking batshit. There was a documentary thing on her on HBO or something not too long ago called “I Am Animal”, and yea. She’s just nuts. It really saddens me when I see celebrities that I love doing ads for PETA because it really seems like they have no idea what their actually supporting. They don’t want you to have pets at all. They don’t have any shelters anywhere, only a little call center so that they can basically call themselves a nonprofit organization. They kill pets that are handed over to them even if the animal is totally adoptable. They openly fund ALF (Animal Liberation Front) which is on the FBI’s list of terrorist organizations because they bomb laboratories and any other place that aren’t “animal friendly”.
Please please PLEASE do more research about this organization! I’m not trying to be an asshole or anything… PETA’s ads and websites are very misleading about what their agenda REALLY is.

tara – yes ingrid believes that with all the homeless animals, that perhaps dogs and cats should never have been domesticated. BUT, they are clearly not against having companions; they have stuff for companions in their own catalog. they just think we should only adopt, never buy.
and yes they euthanize a lot of animals. pretty understandable given they ONLY respond to emergency situations, thus the animals are unadoptable. they are not a shelter. all adoptable animals are referred to the SPCA.

Randi, thank you so much for posting that website. Amazing! He is even against MADD and the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse! It makes total sense that he works for the meat and dairy associations…of course they want PETA out of the picture!
Thank you Randi for setting the record straight. PETA’s in-your-face exposure of animal cruelty has cost the meat & dairy industries BIG. Of course they “plant” anti-PETA propaganda. In 28 years PETA has single handedly brought animal cruelty on all fronts into the mainsteam. PETA is NOT anti companion animal– as you said, they stress adoption– NEVER buy– chances are the pup came from a puppy mill. And remember, you don’t have to adopt every PETA policy, every little bit counts and helps animals so much.
Margaret– you are such a FAV of mine– the way you describe your love for your dogs is identical to how I feel about mine! I can’t imagine life without them. Maybe consider ovo-lacto vegetarianism? I guarantee your farts would be less stanky! Hugs.

I am a long time PETA supporter but the statisrics that I have discovered about PETA killing pets is a shick to me.
To start with I don’t feel that it is a good example for PETA to kill any pets.
As strong as they are about animal welfare which I happen to agree with it doesn’t help when you don’t walk your talk.
I will defenitely keep an eye on this issue and send my money somewhere else.
